Originally from Hangzhou, China, Dr. Wang holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He studied with distinguished instructors such as Christopher Taylor and Peter Miyamoto and attended masterclasses with prominent pianists including Frederic Chiu, Richard Goode, Sergei Babayan, Alessio Bax, Julian Martin, and Marina Lomazov, among others. He has also studied at various summer festivals with renowned pedagogues like Peter Serkin, Yoon Hi Moon, and Bruce Brubaker.
Dr. Wang teaches students of all ages and experience levels, with a special focus on dedicated intermediate and advanced students. His students have achieved notable accomplishments, from passing all levels of the ABRSM exams to winning state piano competitions and gaining admission to prestigious music schools. In 2019, he conducted a masterclass on Chopin’s piano works in Madison, Wisconsin. In 2021, he taught undergraduate and graduate Piano Literature as a substitute for Professor Christopher Taylor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Wang relocated to Spokane, WA in 2022, where he now serves as a collaborative pianist and vocal coach at Gonzaga University and runs a private studio focused on pre-collegiate students. His students have participated in MTNA masterclasses and received awards in state solo and ensemble competitions. He has also appeared on Spokane Public Radio’s Piano Bench program and recently collaborated with Benside Arts, performing on an 1797 Broadwood fortepiano in concerts featuring works by Mozart and Haydn.
Dr. Wang is an accomplished performer, winning awards in both national and international competitions, including the WPTA International Piano Competition, Joyeux International Piano Competition, Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music, and MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition. In 2021, he won the Beethoven Competition at the University of Wisconsin and previously won the MU Concerto and MU Emerging Artist Competitions. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Dr. Wang frequently collaborates with faculty and students from the University of Missouri, the Interharmony International Music Festival, and the Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival, among others. In 2018, he performed with the Interharmony Chamber Music Series at Carnegie Hall. His collaborations include performances with musicians such as Saeka Matsuyama, Jonathan Weber, and Miho Zaitsu. In 2021, Dr. Wang served as the collaborative pianist for the University of Wisconsin Wind Ensemble, premiering Shell and Wing by David Biedenbender. Since joining Gonzaga University in 2022, he has worked with several choirs and vocal ensembles and recently published his dissertation, A New Edition of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C Minor, Op. 111 (1821-1822), showcasing his unique approaches to fingering, pedaling, and interpretation.
