An Afternoon of Extraordinary Talent: Cameron Akioka in Recital & The Grand Finale of the Seattle International Piano Competition
As we approach the culmination of the 10th Seattle International Piano Competition, the excitement is reaching its peak. The festival, which has brought together some of the most talented pianists from around the world, is set to conclude with an extraordinary evening that promises to be a highlight of the year for classical music enthusiasts.
On Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 4:30 pm, we are thrilled to present a special recital by Cameron Akioka, the 2022 President’s Prizewinner and an artist who has captivated audiences with her brilliant technique and deep musical insight. Cameron, a 24-year-old pianist from California, has been praised by critics for her “impressive aplomb and virtuosity,” and her performances have left a lasting impression on audiences across the country.
Cameron’s recital program is a carefully curated selection of works that showcase her versatility and artistic depth. The evening will open with Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata in D major, D.850, a piece that exudes both grandeur and lyrical beauty. Cameron’s interpretation of this work promises to be a masterclass in balancing the sonata’s contrasting moods and textures.
The program continues with two evocative pieces from Claude Debussy’s Images, Book 2: Cloches à travers les feuilles and Poissons d’or. These pieces, known for their rich harmonic language and shimmering colors, are a perfect fit for Cameron’s sensitive touch and ability to bring out the subtle nuances of the piano.
The recital will conclude with one of the pinnacles of the piano repertoire: J.S. Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, from Partita No. 2 for Violin, BWV 1004, as transcribed by Ferruccio Busoni. This monumental work is a tour de force that demands both technical brilliance and profound emotional depth, qualities that Cameron has consistently demonstrated in her performances. Her rendition of this piece is sure to leave the audience spellbound.
Following Cameron’s recital, the late afternoon will transition to the grand finale of the Seattle International Piano Competition: the awards ceremony. This momentous occasion will see the decoration of the 2024 laureates, the culmination of months of intense competition and musical excellence. Competitors from all fully competitive categories will be in attendance, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners. The awards ceremony is not only a celebration of the winners but also a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and artistry that each participant has brought to the competition.
Competitors are requested to sit in the stalls of the house left close to the stage, where they will be able to fully experience the excitement of the evening. The atmosphere will be electric as the names of the laureates are revealed, and the audience shares in the joy and triumph of these remarkable young musicians.
The Seattle International Piano Competition has always been more than just a contest; it is a festival that celebrates the beauty and power of music, bringing together artists, audiences, and communities in a shared appreciation of piano artistry. The combination of Cameron Akioka’s recital and the awards ceremony promises to make this evening an unforgettable conclusion to the festival.
